Who was barefoot charlie?
A Tribute to the Northwoods Legend Who Walked His Own Path
He wasn’t a politician, a sportsman, or a tycoon. He didn’t seek fame or fortune. Yet his story endures, etched into the Northwoods folklore like initials carved in an old cedar tree.
Barefoot Charlie: The Northwoods’ Most Unforgettable Character
There never was, and likely never will be another person quite like Barefoot Charlie, the legendary Northwoods figure whose larger-than-life personality became woven into the folklore of Northwoods Wisconsin.
Charlie Haase (c. 1891-1970) was a man who embodied the rugged, creative, and quirky spirit of Wisconsin’s remote north woods. Though time and fire have claimed the physical remnants of his legacy, the stories of this barefooted pioneer continue to echo through bars, campfires, and historical conversations across the region.
Where the Barefoot Began
As a young boy, Charlie suffered from what was thought to be a serious case of blood poisoning. At the time, a local doctor believed that an old rural remedy of walking barefoot through cow pies would help him recover.
So Charlie did exactly what he was told.
And he recovered.
What started as a medical necessity slowly became a way of life. Long after the illness passed, Charlie never went back to shoes. Summer. Winter. Gravel roads. Tavern floors. Snowbanks. Barefoot became his trademark, not as an act, but as a habit forged in survival.
And just like that, a childhood illness unknowingly planted the seed for a Northwoods legend.
The Man, the Myth, the No-Shoes Policy
Visitors often tried to “fix” Charlie. They’d buy him shoes, boots, anything to protect his feet from the Northwoods elements. Charlie would thank them kindly and then reportedly sell the shoes for beer money!
Because the barefoot life wasn’t something he needed to grow out of.
It was who he was.
Charlie leaned into his identity, sometimes dressing in frontier or rustic attire, turning himself into a living symbol of the untamed Northwoods spirit. He wasn’t pretending to be folklore, he was actively creating it.
From Barefoot to Big Ideas
Charlie grew into a towering, charismatic man with a gift for woodworking, storytelling, and spectacle. Settling in Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin, he began building something that reflected who he was; unconventional, creative, and completely unbothered by rules.
The result was Barefoot Charle’s Rustic Nite Club.
Charlie didn’t just run an ordinary restaurant or bar. Instead, he created a gathering
place that felt like a world unto itself— known variously as Barefoot Charlie’s, Barefoot Charlie’s Tavern, or his Rustic Nite Club in Land O’ Lakes. The establishment drew both locals and curious travelers deep into the Northwoods, a place defined by lakes, forests, and rugged solitude.
Inside, Charlie’s place was as unique as its proprietor. He built much of it with his own hands and decorated it with his own woodworking creations. Stories include whimsical touches like large pine trees growing inside the bar, a working slot machine embedded in the carcass of a large bear, and handcrafted furniture — all crafted by Charlie himself.
The Man Behind the Myth
Although historical records about Charlie’s early life are sparse, local lore paints a vivid portrait of a man who stood over six feet tall, loved woodworking, and delighted in embodying frontier characters — sometimes dressing in pioneer or Native American-style garb as part of events or promotions.
He was more than just an entertainer; he was a community fixture. His bar was a hub for stories, laughter, music, and Northwoods culture. Memories from patrons and neighbors recall a warm, welcoming personality full of humor and eccentricity — a living expression of the free-spirited frontier lifestyle that so many associate with northern Wisconsin.
The End of an Era — But Not the Legend
Barefoot Charlie passed away in 1970 at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy that outlived him.
His beloved Rustic Nite Club stood for nearly two more decades before it was destroyed by a fire in the 1980s — reportedly starting from a malfunctioning heater.
Despite the physical absence of his creation, Charlie’s legend remains alive. Northwoods historians continue to revisit his story, and locals share tales that feel like campfire lore. For a region defined by wild landscapes and the people who make them home, Barefoot Charlie remains a symbol of creativity, individuality, and unfiltered character — a true Northwoods legend.
